When choosing between the Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla, there are many factors to consider. Both models offer similar features, price points, and sizes, with a few key differences. Both vehicles are safe, reliable choices with top safety features and ratings. The Mazda3 has higher performance than the standard option, more room for passengers, and additional assistance features designed to prevent or lessen the impact of collisions.

COROLLA VS. MAZDA3: PERFORMANCE

Regarding performance, the standard 2023 Toyota Corolla features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 169 horsepower. The Corolla also comes in a hybrid powertrain option, which offers 121 horsepower. If you want additional performance, you'll have to upgrade to the GR Corolla "hot hatch," which offers a 1.6-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 300 horsepower.

The 2023 Mazda3 offers two engine options, both of which provide strong horsepower. The base option is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 191 horsepower. The turbocharged version of the Mazda3 features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 250 horsepower for added power. The Toyota Corolla and the Mazda3 have the choice of either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

COROLLA VS. MAZDA3: GAS MILEAGE

When it comes to gas mileage, the 2023 Toyota Corolla offers an estimated 31 city/40 highway mpg, while the 2023 Mazda3 gets an estimated 28 city/37 highway mpg. The difference in gas mileage between the two is mainly in weight. The Mazda3 packs more space and is slightly larger, weighing slightly more than the Toyota Corolla.

Both the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3 have always offered top-of-the-line safety features. For the 2023 models, both of these compact cars earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, the highest possible rating available. Additionally, both models have 5-star safety ratings by the NHTSA.

The 2023 Toyota Corolla features Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0, a pre-collision safety system to avoid pedestrian collisions, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing and departure assist, automatic high beams, road sign assist, and proactive driving assist. These features offer assistance in avoiding collisions using the vehicle's built-in cameras and radar.

The 2023 Mazda3 comes with i-Activsense® safety features designed to avoid collisions and lessen the severity of any that occur, including traffic jam assist, which assists with steering during speeds under 40 mph. To help with parking, the Mazda3 includes front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree view monitor, perfect for tight spaces and parallel parking. 

When backing up, the Mazda3 enables rear cross-traffic alerts, which notify you if a vehicle is approaching from the side in the side mirror and rear view monitor display. Additionally, it can be equipped with brake support-rear crossing, which works in tandem with rear cross-traffic alerts to apply the brakes if a car is approaching as you back up.

COROLLA VS. MAZDA3: PASSENGER AND CARGO SPACE

Regarding passenger space, the Mazda3 takes the cake when it comes to comfort. The 2023 Toyota Corolla Sedan has a total passenger volume of 88.6 cu-ft, while the Corolla Hatchback has 84.6 cu-ft of passenger space. Meanwhile, Mazda has a total passenger volume of 92.8 cu-ft for the Mazda3 Sedan and 92.7 cu-ft for the Mazda3 Hatchback. 

The Toyota Corolla and Mazda3 are nearly even in terms of cargo space. For the Mazda3, the sedan option includes 13.2 cu-ft of cargo space, and the hatchback offers 20.1 cu-ft. The Corolla Sedan has a cargo capacity of 13.1 cu-ft, and the Corolla Hatchback has a maximum cargo capacity of 23.0 cu-ft.

COROLLA VS. MAZDA3: WARRANTY COVERAGE AND RELIABILITY

The Toyota Corolla and Mazda3 come with a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The Toyota Corolla also includes a free-maintenance plan with two years or 25,000 miles of coverage. Both of these vehicles have similar reliability ratings and receive average customer satisfaction.

COROLLA VS. MAZDA3: PRICE

The 2023 Toyota Corolla and Mazda3 offer similar price points, with the Corolla starting at $21,550 and the Mazda3 starting at $22,550. For the top XSE trim of the Corolla, expect a starting price of $26,700. The Mazda3 turbo premium plus, the top-of-the-line trim for the Mazda3, starts at $35,300.
