The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is Mazda's latest model type available, starting this year. A crossover compact that is a bit more ruggedly styled than the CX-30 and Mazda3 models with which it shares a platform, the CX-50 offers similar athletic handling. All Mazda CX-50's come with a 6-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Additionally, a not yet released hybrid option is in the works, with more information on its specs coming in the future.

WHAT'S NEW FOR THE 2023 MAZDA CX-50?

The Mazda CX-50 is a brand new model type for Mazda, which will be sold alongside the slightly smaller CX-5, although it is unknown how long these two will be seen together, with the CX-5 being an older edition. It is available in a wide selection of trim options, each with its selection of features that give even the more economical choices a luxury feel.

ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, AND PERFORMANCE

All models of the Mazda CX-50 come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The base, non-turbo choice starts at 187 horsepower, while its turbocharged variant offers 256 horsepower. The all-wheel drivetrain comes with a standard 6-speed automatic transmission with smooth handling. The CX-50 offers a fun and accurate driving experience, with athletic handling that makes for a joyful experience behind the wheel.

FUEL ECONOMY AND REAL-WORLD MPG

According to the EPA, the Mazda CX-50 offers an efficient 24 city/30 highway mpg rating in its base model. Additionally, despite its extra power, the turbocharged edition adds plenty of performance while only dropping these numbers by one mpg, giving the model an average of 27 mpg combined city/highway for the base and 25 mpg for the turbocharged version.

INTERIOR, COMFORT, AND CARGO

Similar to the CX-5 and CX-30, the Mazda CX-50 includes two rows of seats that accommodate up to five passengers. The vehicle's interior has a luxurious atmosphere, with numerous high-end features and design elements. The dashboard is large and square, making the CX-50 a more truck-like feel inside.

Even with slightly less headroom than the CX-5, the CX-50 still offers comfortable, adjustable, cushioned, and supportive front seats. The back row also packs a row of comfortable seats. All models have a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a push-button start, and a partially digital gauge display.

INFOTAINMENT AND CONNECTIVITY

The base Mazda CX-50 comes built with an 8.8-inch infotainment display, while all other trim options come with a larger, 10.3-inch screen. Regardless of screen size, all models run the latest version of the Mazda Connect interface and are controlled using a click wheel found on the center console.

All models come with Apple Airplay and Android Auto with wireless connectivity. The standard sound system features an 8-speaker stereo, with Premium and Premium Plus trim options, including an upgraded 12-speaker Bose stereo equipped with a SiriusXM satellite radio. At the top trim option, the Turbo Premium Plus, a wireless phone charger, is also included in the infotainment features.

SAFETY AND DRIVER-ASSISTANCE FEATURES

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 was a 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick +, the highest rating by the IIHS, all thanks to an array of standard safety features available in all trim options, including automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Depending on the model, all CX-50 trim options also come with many of Mazda's i-Activsense® safety features. The Turbo Premium Plus trim includes an even more expansive list of safety features, including Traffic Jam Assist, front and rear parking sensors, a 360° View Monitor, and more.

The NHTSA has not yet rated the 2023 Mazda CX-50, but most Mazda models receive an overall rating of five stars during crash testing, making Mazda one of the safest car brands in the world. Mazda has been named the Most Reliable Car Brand in 2022 by Consumer Reports, overtaking brands such as Toyota and Lexus.
